Just that you can get more from the horn load than you can with a bigger diameter woofer. At the time, Vega pretty well nailed the mechanical failure problems with an 18- with 1000watts as the target.You get better mechanical stability with a 12- or better 14" woofer than with larger diameters. Plus you can use more 12" if needed- like EAW bass horns- another nice design.
