I know the accepted idea is to use an exponential flare to connect to a conical horn. I have done tests with a round conical horn with a jbl 2410 driver with no exp adaptor, with an exp adaptor, and an adaptor 1/2 way between the two.
What matters is that if the exp connector is too long, you will limit the upper ( past 6kHz) dispersion. My test show it is better to make a comprimise between the two. RCA discovered this same result in their conical horn tests in the 50's. I have the original lab samples from RCA and they show similar test results.
