Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

Initial Impressions: Fostex FE206ESR

Got my pair into my speakers only two days ago. I'm using a pair of Supravox cabinets driven by a new DIY JLH69 class A amp. I had been using the older FE206E drivers for the past week to get reaccustomed to the sound. These older versions are fun and can crank, but are a bit too colored for me. Maybe it's my cabinets in combination with these specific drivers, but while I liked the sound, I never loved it. My main speakers are Merlin VSM-MM with superbam.

So how do these sound? Pretty darn fantastic right away. It took only about a half hour to really start to see how much better these are than the older version. The colored midband that was not very transparent before, got much better. It began to throw a soundstage that was huge and very palatable. The realism that came forth stunned me. I didn't know really what to expect and these things go way beyond what I had hoped for. And they are probably a long way from being broken in.

They disappear now, whereas before they didn't really do that well. They cast a huge image that is very beguiling and real. They have detail and air that is really magical. The sound is similar in tonality to the older model, but they took the good and eliminate much of the bad. Where I probably would never live long term with the previous model, this new one has me considering why I need the Merlins.....the biggest complement I can make. We'll see if my enthusiasm continues as they break in. So far a fantastic purchase that changed my opinion of full rangers.
