My impression is that, largely due to the currents they carry and often exposure to SPL, the audible differences of these components are exacerbated. Wrt non-air cored inductors, among the best I've heard (and that measure among the best) are the silicon steel solenoid core types that Madisound and Parts Express sell.

One reason I mentioned 'cheap lytics', is that in certain applications, their dielectric absorption can result ina non exponential delayed discharge of up to several seconds of several percent of their stored charge which has been subjectively described as a reduction of low level detail and dynamics, something that could seem to potentially impact the audibility of such things as the HOMS you have made reference to.
