Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

Re: Precen vs. Present

Part of the problem, at least, is the idea that a loudspeaker system should have 'flat' response. I find when a system is adjusted for flat response using a spectrum analyzer, it will always aound too bright. Back in the 60's and 70's, I remember reading a paper which basically concluded that to sound correct, a system should be flat to about1-2kHz,, then roll off at some rate after that. I dont remember the source of the paper now, nor the recommended rolloff rate, but I think there must be some truth to that. The problem is compounded by all the unknowns in the recording chain, as well.
What we typically do at H.E.L. is to adjust the system for flat response, and then do final tweeking by ear in the upper octaves to achieve the 'proper balance'. This is somewhat subjective, of course, but we try to keep our collective ears calibrated by regular attendance at the local symphony performances available in and around the SF bay area. There is no substitute for real live unamplified music to keep ones ear in tune. We use some of the better recordings available to use as our standard sources, such as Sheffield Labs recordings and Refrence Recordings. Someday. maybe science can dial it in perfectly, but for now...
