While not a mainstream format, the world of "free jazz" and "avant-garde" offers many of my favorite drummers in duet settings: Ed Blackwell with trumpeter Don Cherry; Andrew Cyrille with drummer Milford Graves, pianists Marilyn Crispol and Borah Bergman, with saxophonists Anthony Braxton, Jimmy Lyons, and Peter Brotzmann; Billy Higgins with saxophonist Charles Lloyd; and Hamid Drake with saxophonists Kidd Jordan and Frank Gratkowski [full disclosure: I produced the two Hamid Drake dates.]
None of these recordings were made for the purpose of sound system demonstration, but there were plenty from the "stereo" era that were. Anyone who has spent time crate digging has seen a number of these or their ilk at the thrift store:
