Yes orchestras do sound silky (at least to may ears) even very loud, and good sopranos' voices are magic (no peaks!!!!!).
It also depends where you sit in the concert hall. In the one I have been used to orchestras sound natural relax and with a touch of hardeness. In top the seats area one hears more the brass section.
