G'day TomIt was Metallica's Death Magnetic album that went WAY over the top with it's highly compressed and clipped recording.
Sadly for Metallica fans, it's the album they have been waiting on for 20 years. (The 20 year gap was filled with albums the fans didn't like) Musically Death Magnetic is what the die hard Metallica fan was after, but unfortunately it is unlistenable because of some stupid decisions made during the mastering process. There's a petition to push Metallica to remaster the album here: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/re-mix-or-remaster-death-magnetic.html
It currently has around 20K signatures on it. The band are defending the sound, so it's unlikely a remastered version will be released. Here you can see that this album has essentially 0dB dynamic range http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/metallica-death-magnetic-sounds-better-on-guitar-hero-iii
A Google search finds a huge number of sites talking about this problem.BTW the new AC/DC album Black Ice sounds pretty much like all the AC/DC albums since 1980. Amazing what a bunch of 50-60 y/o guys can do after 30+ years on the road.
