I had similiar experience. I owned the Altec Valencia, and sold them because of horn colourations (btw, I sold them to a soprano singer!). I tried other Altecs, Electrovoice etc. All the same problems.
I like the dynamics, but can't stand the hardness of these horn speakers. I listen now to Nelson Reeds. Quad 63 are beautiful for classic music and jazz, and within their dynamic limitations, come very close the sound you hear at a concert.
Do not waste your time with the Altec 19. The 18 is better, with less colourations, but still a typical horn speaker.
Just for clarification: I do not say that ALL horn speaker have these colouration, just the ones I heard.
