My Altec Model 19's have some qualities I like. The bass and tamed Altec mids are fine with me but there's no highs IMHO and that makes them sound dull to me. If I try to EQ in more highs I hear screechy distorted harshness from the 802G drivers.
Added tweeters work much better for me but sometimes I then feel there's too much detail and clarity and I'm getting tired of trying to find a middle ground with the speakers or trying to voice the equipment to the speakers.
I listen to my little EV Esquire 200 3 way bookshelf speakers and even though there's no real low bass the mids sound warm yet lifelike enough and there's highs without adding anything.
Then I switch to my AR LST's and I hear a layer of bass all the time that gets annoying but the mids and highs are OK.
There's no perfect speaker so they are all a compromise.
The worse I have being a pair of small speakers that retailed at $3500 and got Stereophile recommended equipment status.
I'm beginning to think that I should sell the "better" vintage stuff and newer MC cartridges and just go back to the EV Esquires, Scott 299A and my Grado MCZ5, Shure V15 Type 3 or Grace F9L in the TD124 with SME3009 arm.
Hobby is one thing but if the quest never stops your not enjoying the music so there comes a point where you should stop the quest and enjoy what you have for what it is.
