Listened to a pair of Klipschorns today with that cd.K43s, 6X13 throats, bass sounded real good. BMS co-ax on those 'bentwood' horns coming out of Canada. Bi-amped on the low end, and a passive cross at 6.3Khz
Sounded good on many things, but not on that cd. Percussion sounded quite bad, trombone solo on Dishrag sounded horrible. Of course it sounds horrible on stock Klipschorns too. Had stock tops available, K400/K55V(solder lug)/K77M/AA, they didn't sound as good as the K5J/1824M/KSN1016A he normally runs.
Next time I will drag one of my DSP crossovers along and show him what it sounds like to get rid of the time delay between the woofer and the HF section. I wager that will solve some problems.
Not sure I like those 'bentwood' horns. The throat transition stinks, and they are just veneered. One of these arrived with shipping damage, so it could be seen how they were constructed during the repair proocess. It looks like they cement the veneer on to tempered Masonite, laser cut them, and then glue them up. Small amount of what looks like fiberglass run through a chopper on the back and around the ribs. What do you expect for $870 delivered?
I'm not sure about the BMS yet. My friend likes the basic sound, he may buy them from me. We fooled around sticking some foam in the throat, but they really need to have the transition piece re-designed. After that they will probably need some sort of foam insert to reduce early reflections from the 1" exit to the horn structure walls. Looking at the impedance peaks, it looks like a very poor match in the 7Khz range. The EV horn with the cast vanes in the throat (HP640) measures a lot better in this regard, but my two pair were loaned out and we only had a single to play with.
Going to try and listen to my JBL 2435 Be drivers tomorrow.
