Re: TAD based 2 way DIy speaker project

Here is a link to the specs for my tad drivers. It is 1 and 15/16" Vs. 2 inches for the throat connection. But when I attatched them onto my jbl 2360A horns they bolted right up with no problems. I used a EV pro crossover sent to me by a pro sound man gratus. Sadly I lost his contact information in my last computer crash, but I think he was from NJ. He was very helpful to me when I was first setting them up and I needed to go buy 16 ohm L-pads. I now use the Marchand xm-126 active vacuum tube crossover with them crossed to my bass bins at 800 Hz. The specs say the td-4001 drivers can go down to 600Hz. But my JBL bass bins can be crossed as high as 1100Hz I have been told. So I settled on my 800Hz crossover point compromise for now with the drop in frequency change boards from Phil Marchand. I have run the 2-way speakers on the passive crossover with everything from a 100 wpc CJ tube amp, to a single pair of 1.7 wpc 45 SET amps. Believe it or not the sound was superb on the flea powered amps driving the 2-way speakers. Biamplified I now use my 45 or my 300b mono blocks on the tad drivers, and either the 300b or my 35 wpc Klimo EL34 mono block amps. I much prefer the sound of these speakers with the active speaker crossover over the passive crossovers. I have also heard 2-way speakers with ss active crossovers by Rane (I think it was?) and they sounded very good. My speakers are Fugly 6 foot tall beasts with zero WAF looking with the big horns, but they really sound excellent to my ears. Luckily I was able to scrounge my old tad drivers used and working for about 1/4 the price of new ones. When I have the extra coin someday I still want the 32' Sierra Brooks solid wood tractix horns and the double Onken style horn loaded bass bins that I have the plans for. When I listen to the album "Rise" by Herb Alpert it has so much bass and percussion you can feel it thumping you in the chest. That is one of my favorite torture test albums for my critical listening to new speakers I buy. As bad as some of Herb's T.B. Brass albums were this one from 1980 is darn good fun to listen to. You can hear the artists laughing and having fun working together in the background of this album. From his web site;

"1980
Herb's track "1980" from the "Rise" album is featured in the 1980 Olympics world-wide telecast.

Herb Alpert wins a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Rise." The "Rise" album is certified gold and platinum simultaneously on February 5. The follow-up singles, "Rotation" and "Street Life" are also multiformat Pop/R&B/Easy Listening hits."
