Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

4435/4350

In 1985, reading about the 4430 in "Improvements in Monitor Loudspeaker Systems" had me order two pair sight unseen.

A B&W 801 sounded 'colored' in a side-by-side with the 4430.

But as regards the 4435/4350, I've lived with both. On most program material the 4435 sounds smoother. The 4350 has much less FMD.

But on program material with deep bass and any kind of sustained note in the midrange, flute, trumpet, etc, the result is unlistenable.

Even in the absence of a sustained note the FMD becomes noticeable, the sound becomes 'congested'.

The solution was really quite simple, make a hybrid.

The 4425 is too inefficient because it has bass.

The SR4722 has the same HF diver and horn as the 4425 and is 98dB/W/1M, but it doesn't sound 'hi-fi'.

Part of the problem is the very simple (compared to a 4425) network, the other part is the 2206. The 2204 (the model that the 2206 replaced) was the answer, long with a custom network.

I designed a network for the 2204 that gave a ±1dB response from 100hz to 1.2Khz, after trying the 4425/4430/4435/4722 high pass sections, and trying my own, I ended up with a 4435 high pass section. The HF ended up being ±2dB from 1.2Khz to 16Khz.

This was the ticket.

The first pair were mated with stereo 18s (2245), subsequent pairs with push-pull slot-loaded dual 15s (Eminence 151269). Because of the distortion reduction from the cabinet design these things will kick sand in the 2245s face and at a fraction of the cost too.

The end result had the strengths of both the 4435 and the 4350 with none of the drawbacks.

Big horns are fun too, but I was never able to figure out how to get my 80" wide RCA Olson bins (also known as Shearer horns) into the house.
