I don't see that there is necessarily much of a problem with vertically aligned drivers being up to half a wavelength or so apart at xover such as I have done, since under that condition, the lobing nulls at xover will occur directly above and below the speaker, reducing a room reflective mode or two. You may have alluded to doing something similar in your post, but I wasn't absolutely sure of this.
