The subjective sound of AG speakers continues to puzzle me. I have experienced both sides of the coin. The first two times I heard Duos, I did not like particularly like them. In fact, the second time (a different listening environment to the first time) I positively disliked them. At that stage I might have agreed with the much quoted idea that perhaps they are hypercritical of room and associated equipment.Having now lived with them for a while, I have to agree with Mr. Walker that they are in many aspects remarkably unfinicky. Yes, position in the room and type of amplification can and do make a noticeable difference, but the Duos have a prevailing quality of sound that makes them enjoyable in virtually every circumstance I have tried. This completely conflicts with my earlier experiences and the views expressed by many others. Verily, these are the speakers of the Devil! (apologies to Herr Fromme).
If the large number of postings on the subject of Beauhorns v AGs is any indication, it seems that they are both excellent speaker designs. After that, it's all personal opinion. There have been comments indicating that each type of speaker is / is not critical of room and associate equipment. You pays your money and you takes your choice.
I am possibly one of the few people involved in this correspondence who has been fortunate enough to spend 5 days at home with Beauhorns and Duos. At least this allowed me to evaluate them under conditions that I know and with familiar amplification (and with unfamiliar amplification). This sure as Hell doesn't make me an expert on comparing the two types of speaker, but it possibly gives me a stronger basis on which to comment than those who have not had the same opportunity.
I bought the Duos because I liked them. Forget my small negative comment about possible hardness on transients with the Beauhorns; that was not really a determining factor in my purchasing decision. I chose the Duos because they pleased me when I listened to them. So did the Beauhorns, but not quite to the same extent. I am sure that if I had not heard the Duos sounding good, I would have been happy to live with the Beauhorns.
After spending quite a long time and some effort in evaluating speakers, it pleases me that I ended up choosing two such obviously special designs for my shortlist (he said smugly!).
