Beauhorns and Avantgardes

Why is it that, of all the hornloaded loudspeakers that are now commercially available, it's always the Beauhorns that seem to generate debates involving the Avantgarde Duos?

In any case, I must state again that I think the Duos are among the most impressive speakers I've ever heard. The main reasons I ordered the Beauhorns instead are that (1) I cannot afford the Duos (even the Unos are a stretch), and (2) my wife told me that I could get a new pair of speakers ONLY if I was willing to put them right up against the back wall of our living room, and preferably in the corners (she couldn't stand the fact that my old speakers had to be placed -- gasp! -- two-and-a-half feet into the living space). I seriously doubt that the Avantgardes would have worked well with this setup, but it's ideal for the Beauhorns.

So, what am I giving up here? Well, there's no doubt that the Avantgarde Duos have a clear advantage over the Beauhorns in terms of frequency extension, and that their response within the stated frequency range is definitely flatter. I also suspect that the Duos are better able to fully load a large listening area.

But, based on the technical descriptions of these two speakers as well as the reviews I've read, I'm betting that the Beauhorns may actually have the edge in the following two categories:

1) Coherence. This is not to say that the Duos sound in the least "incoherent" (which some have claimed, but which does not match my own listening impressions), just that the Beauhorns may be a bit better. After all, having the entire frequency range radiating from a single driver should impart SOME advantage in this department, right?

2) Midbass performance. To my ears, the 50-200 Hz range is essential for laying down a realistic musical foundation. With the Beauhorns, this range is not only supported by the same driver used for the remainder of the sonic spectrum, but it's also horn-loaded, and horn-loaded bass is just unbelievably good. In contrast, the Duos divide up the midbass between two separate drivers, with a self-powered dynamic subwoofer handling most of it. Of course, the Duos' midbass still sounds quite wonderful, but note that it's the Beauhorns that consistently win the most praise from audio reviewers for their midbass performance ("shocking", "amazingly fast and lifelike", etc.).

But these are just hypotheses, and I won't be able to say anything with certainty until the Beauhorns arrive next week...
