Altec 421. They were at least the equal to JBLs in the lows and were considerably better in the mids.
I used Altec 421's (with the metal dust cap) in the big bad bass reflex speakers I built as a 20 year old for parties. I used to pre record LP's greatest dance music on a Crown with big reels of tape. Only needed 2 of those. I got paid to push the button, then go dancing with girls and drink free beer at college gigs. According to the CPL calculator that would be about $950 today. Then came Saturday Night Fever that made more like work because we had to talk on a microphone and take requests, so I started doing Wedding Receptions. Those were the days, which I eventually went to Klipsch LaScalas. Today, I would use my own designs with BT-7 horns or one of your designs for the task.
