My impression has long been that HiFi was fading by the mid-sixties (as transistors replaced tubes? or stereo replaced mono?) but the hippie folk/psychedelic rock enthusiasm for music produced a temporary resurgence. That morphed into computers, leaving the Stereophile connoisseur/snob appeal market to pick over the bones, with cheap digital crap for the masses. Then in the last couple decades a DIY revolt against faceless consumerism brought many free spirits back, but mainstream culture still has trouble believing that.
My view of history, your perception may vary! :^)
