Re: My Edgarhorn system - wouldn't be tough to build & save $$ excellent sound

Hi Tom -

I've not felt well for a while so my Edgarhorn system is dormant - it sounds very nice and 'natural' on vocals - I use either my homemade 85lb parallel 2A3 amp with IT coupled 5842Q driver, a mu-follower passive RIAA phono preamp (built some years ago by Bill Petrowsky) - other amps are my mod Eico ST -70 w. no loop feedback and class AB1 parallel 6BX7(~300vdc VAK - PS is choke-input on 6BX7 and cap-input on rest of tubes)- inverter is stock 6SN7 cathode-coupled and 1st stage a 6DJ8 w. 47KRp biased to give the same plate voltage as the original 12AX7 so the inverter is biased properly. (solid-state amp is Hafler XL280 - sounds fine w. tube preamp)

The SE amp is very easy and seductive with the right recordings - my push-pull 6BX7 has better control in the bass and may be just as good otherwise - in both cases the Edgarhorns have the 1/4 size 100Hz hyperbolic horn padded ~6dB to match the LE5 on 250Hz tractrix horn sensitivity - so my 6 watts is reduced to a max of ~1.5 watts to the JBL2220H - If this was passively biamped @6dB/oct then the dynamics would improve. The ~110Hz corner calls for a sub-woofer so I have Bruce's 'Monolith' (shown in Speaker Builder) which is a 1/8 size 40hz flare.

Even without a phase plug the simple midhorn w. LE-5 on 3/8" spacers can sound beautiful on male vocals - Pavel Lisitsian sounds as if he's in the room - drums and upright bass have good projection.

You could easily build the 100Hz and 250hz horns as they employ two flat/angled sides to hold the slats which comprise the flare. The basshorn is ~21" square at the mouth and ~30" deep to its back chamber - sensitivity w. JBL2220H ~108dB.

If you consider building these then ask about other woofers - the 2220H has some "cone-cry" ~1Khz which needs to be mechanically damped - might take just some felt glued to the dust cap.

Take Care

Freddy
