I agree 100%. Too many people underpower their horns. to get the right dynamics on an A5 system, I find 25w/channel to be minimal. So the only SE amps that I find acceptable are 211-based. But for me, 40-55W/channel is optimal. Unfortunately it does take quite a bit of searching to find
a 40W PP amp that is suitable for horns. I eventually found (after 10 yrs) an outstanding custom swiss 55w/ch amp. The best commercial amp for an A5 system is (in my opinion) the Altec 128 B (40w/ch and a studio monitor amp) -- but these are somewhat rare. QuadII, is ok but somewhat underpowered. Some older 6L6 amps are suitable. The Altec theatre amps (1569a, 1568b, 1570) are excellent but have no bass below 80hz. I have had good success with other theatre amps too. Some of the Mcintosh amps(m60,m30) were ok -- others were not. Unfortunately most of the common PP amps (both vintage & modern.... marantz8b, eico-hf87, dynaco st70, arc60, quicksilver m60, cj-mv55, vtl225, jadis-defy7 (to name a few that i have tried) are useless on A5 horns. Guess damping has something to do with suitability.
