Re: so whats wrong with wharfedale?

I share your enthusiasm for Briggs and the "old" Wharfedale products. I still have numerous 1960s brochures, kit building instructions, etc from Wharfedale as well as 3 of Briggs' books. His "Cabinet Handbook" of 1962 says of the Airdale: "Although difficult or possibly impossible to build at home, we are including drawings as they may be helpful to readers in more remote corners of the earth". Well, that was a challenge to me as a poor student at the time! I was working on a building project and managed to scrounge some 3/4" high density shutter ply and got a chippie to cut the panels. Add the cut-outs, quarry tiles, sand filled baffles, the drive units and the dreaded Tygan cloth, and the large 6 sided cabinet was built. Powered by home built Heathkit amp, preamp, tuner and "tape preamplifier" and I was listening to pretty good sound, despite being mono.

When building the second speaker, I made one major change to the Airdale design. I faced the mid and top units downwards towards a conical reflector, instead of upwards. I couldn't stand the thought of my visitors drunkenly spilling their beer into the slots on the cabinet top.

Later, I changed these drive units for newer Wharfedale ones, but these were inferior although brighter. Later still, I changed all the drive units and XO to KEF units (B139, T110 and T33) all facing forward for much better stereo effect. This made the speakers effectively LS3/5As with a 4 1/2 cu ft woofer cabinet below. The Airdale was designed in the mono age and was delibrerately "omni-directional" - useless for stereo!

The guy I sold them to phoned me a couple of months back as I had asked for first refusal if he resold them. He had spent hundreds on improving the XOs and reckonned they sounded fantastic. I hope they've found a good new home.
