Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

For Deep Purple and Pink Floyd?? Hmmmm...

Hello Analogrock,

I'm a long-time speakerbuilder myself, and your quest sounds like a challenging one to me. As you probably know, few "full-range" drivers do justice to the 40-to-80 Hz octave, much less the one below.

The PHY 12-inch "full-range" (crossoverless with coaxial piezo tweet) drivers have a fairly high Qts, which means they give good bass punch in a transmission line cabinet. Disclaimer - I peddle 'em. That being said, if you seriously want to rock the house, then a full-range driver probably isn't going to do it. The reason is, their x-max is too small. You have to move a lot of air to do justice to classic rock. I would suggest you consider a two-way with a reflex loaded woofer and a horn-loaded compression driver.

The good news is, you don't need subterranian bass - an honest in-room 40 Hz should be sufficient for classic rock, which means you can keep the efficiency fairly high. You can expect to end up with a box size in the 3-6 cubic foot ballpark, and an efficiency in the mid 90's.

Best of luck with your project!

Duke
