The EL509 and the 6BX7 are both good tubes. I remember reading somewhere that the 6BX7 and the similar 6BL7 (which I use as a driver tube in my OTL design, btw), have exceptionally good linearity (that has been my experience with the OTL, since even though the overall topology is balanced, the performance of the (DC coupled) connection between the 6BL7 and the upper and lower totem pole 6AS7 sections it drives is highly dependent on the driver tube having excellent static and dynamic linearity across a wide range of plate voltages and I have seen no asymmetry worth commenting about on a scope even without loop feedback using the 6BL7 in a long tailed differential configuration.I don't know all that much about guitar amp designs, but somebody drove a whole raft of 6550's or KT88's with one 12at7 in their design which doesn't do hf linearity many favors.
