edta,No, not really. Solid state uses a bank of capacitance in the power supply to draw upon when overdriven to clipping. Problem is, the amp's transistors are limited by the voltage rails as to how much they can pass. Then things can get ugly. They clip hard(grossly distort) when the draw exceeds the output capabilities.
Tube amps(OTLs withstanding) rely on the output transformer to draw upon when clipped, and the reserve is much greater usually, and not limited by the voltage problem of SS. Clipping is cushioned by the transformer, and doesn't immediately go into gross distortion.
