edta,
I think that big improvements can be had using a bi-amp configuration.
You won't wipe out the highs with a badly distorted woofer response into a single crossover.
Consider your SS for bass, and the tube gear for mids/highs.
I also think the best combination of resolution and bloom is not just amp dependent. I find front end hardware(and software) to contribute significantly. If primarily CD, then "bloom" may be difficult to accomplish if handicapped with a mediocre source or preamp, but that's just my experience. I know that as the CD/DVD/SACD player gets better, the natural timbre and flow get more analog-like, finally losing that metallic sheen on digital, and getting closer to live. This is noticeable even with solid state amps. You may want to try inserting a little passive pre to see what influences your normal pre is having. RS has it all for $10, and you'll need a cigar box. You may find this to be much cleaner.
As far as good tube gear goes, you'll have to experiment a bit. I have heard Kurt Chang's little ss gaincard clone at ~15 watts really light up a 97 dB speaker. So I would use that as the minimum power requirement. Maybe build one yourself for $30 as a test set-up.
If you could get your hands on a quiet(emphasis on quiet)Dynaco ST 70, Eico, even ASL or DIYHIFI 15-35 watter and play at home, you might find your wishes are granted at minimum cost.
The Pass would, I'm sure, be great if you can find one for a trial. But the dollars increase.Hope this helps.
Tim
