Hi Robert -some "interesting" (& funny) replies - Maggies - short for Jim Winey's Magnaplanar speakers - orignally a single-end drive electro-dynamic equivalent of an electrostat speaker dipole linesource - I used and enjoyed them (MG1 IMP and Tympani 1D) for a decade from mid 70's to mid 80's in a fairly small room (12'x15' driving with everything from mod Dyna, EAR 509, Belles, B.Moore to Pass A40 and Carver Cube) but newer house's acoustics aren't favorable with Maggies so in that situation an Edgarhorn 100 system worked and sounded far better and the efficiency allowed use of a DIY low-powered SE triode amp or mod Eico push-pull 6BX7 triode amp which gave a new level of 3D sound IMO
Magnapan's open baffle design in the right situation can sound nice - kinda hard to put this into perspective as its been over decade since I've heard them - as they age there are typical problems with glue drying out, wires loosening and tweeter panel wire failure - believe you can audition the smallest model via mail with a money-back guarantee - here's a link to a story on Mr. Winey
