Re: Highs are often excruciating... Like nails on a blackboard???

Guddai [aussie greeting]
I have some views re. the shrillness complained of. I have winced often in my time! Over time, my system has passed from Cornwall 1 to la Scala 1982. Such was the despair that my mind took me to other hobbies... If I listened it was to a select repetoire.
The last few weeks have seen a personal resurgance in interest and rewards have flowed. now, I am very happy...sitting square on to the la Scalas and loving the whole spectrum.
1./ add a cheap but clever mains cable for your CD. Credit here to Chris Venhaus.[use Google to find]. This step is crucial! I used 10 amp mains cable [his cheap version] solid core, air-pressure line and wrapped the safety earth round a toroid ferrite. Shielding was with cooking foil and a drain wire prior to pushing down the air line. The saftey earth is counter wound on the ouside of the air line. Very clever!
2./ Rewire all your signal strength cable with solid core THIN cable. I used Radio Shack wirewrap 30 gauge Kymar coated silver flashed copper. Build your own interconnects useing a simple twisted pair arrangement. Use el cheapo plastic phono plugs.
3./ Rewire your speakers with solid core cable. I used Apature silver/copper /Teflon cable, cut open to reveal the several strands. 1 metre per side will do the trick...do stick with solid core and forget Monster philosophy of big is better...single cable for mid and high, twisted pair for the bass if you are paranoid. Rewire your crossover with solid core.[less important than the main cables, but truth is worthy of pursuing....
4./ Clean your forked spade lugs and your crossover terminal strip with emery paper. Use a contact enhancer if you are paranoid.Your crossver is 25 yrs old!!! Dirt [oxide] is a diode!
5./Damp the outside of your metal horns with mastic or sand. My la Scalas are sand filled [a sloping dune of sand covers the tweeter and leads to the back edge. The crossover is moved off board and now sits gently on the bed of sand [waiting for a Pina Colada] This sand also damps the bass enclosure.
6./Set up your speakers using WASP.[Wilson Audio Speaker Placement] Go to www.tntaudio.com for details.
7./ If you removed the bug traps from the throats of your tweets or sqwawks in the search for extra clarity, put them back!

Hoping this helps...e-mails welcome
And yes, I use valves...EAR 549 pushpull at 200watts...sufficient headroom I think!...not planned, these were great with my Martin Logan Sequel 2's and have somehow stayed...cos they are bloody brill!
