Sounds like we just missed each other down in NC.
SOD was great I learned a lot, had a good time and made some good friends. How is Wilmington/Wrightsville these days?
Last time I went down was 5 years ago.
Now I am an architect in New York City, thinking about building a simple house in the mountains...away from towers trains beidges and anthrax...
Love the Fi, it seems to not interfere with rythm and pacing of the music very fast and a beauty too. Has a nice punchy bass.
Don Garber is a pleasure to deal with, honest and knowledgable.
Its a simple circuit and after using Sovteks for a year I tried some RCA blackplates... couldnt take them of, they sound fluid, full and smooth, maybe the 40s technology is what the Lowthers like.
Their bandwidth isnt as great as the Sovteks. With SACDs the Sovteks' highs were incredibly extended. It is unusual to hear such high frequencies so clean.
I have heard great things about the Moondogs, and had a chance to meet Ron Welborne at the show in NYC last year. Great guy.
I am dreaming of a 300b second amp, a Laurel kit?
Tha Voigt Pipes, I built straight outta the Norway site, altered some details, (Ill try and dig up pictures) for design reasons, not acoustic.
I did stuff it halfway full of insulation and improved the sound quite a bit. With the Lowther PM2As they were a bit lean and harsh, but imaged real well somehow. Simple acoustic music like Garcia Grisman Pizza Tapes was awsome, Art Blakey and Monk were OK if you could do with minimal bass.(in the hundred and some Hz)
Rock music was awful. The weight of the Lowther made them easy to tip over, which caused an awful disaster- I had to get the coil realigned.
With the fostex I found the top extension a bit weak until I plugged in the SACD player, then it was real nice, imaged well,
not the pin point sweet spot of the Lowther.
The sound was full and detailed enough for a single driver.
They had a balanced sound with nice midrange.
For the money I dont think you can complain.
The SACD of Beethoven fifth sounded awsome, so did regular Cds and vinyl of Art Blakey, Duke, Led Zep, and Bach violin concertos.
I am curious about the Hammer Dynamics for a couple of hundred more and a simpler cabinet. The Voigt pipe has a tricky cut with the long triangle if you dont have a big table saw and make some jigs.
I can get into more detail if you are interested...Also I hear Bert Doppenberg has a 2 driver down firing folded version of the voigt pipe that sounds much better. I think you can link through the Melhuish site. Also Zalytron has some nice efficient kits for under a grand, some use the raven ribbon tweeter and or focal drivers.
I suspect the Proacs might sound better than the Voigt pipe.
I use Medallions/PM2As now and after adding some deflex sheets behind the drivers they get smoother highs and more articulated bass(50-40Hz). Also changing the power cord on the CD player did amazing things...The Lowthers do have an amazing clarity, presence and microdetail.Hard to get used to anything else afterwards.
