Hey Don,
I don't feel I lost my cool in my last post, at least no more so than your reference to piss pumps, whatever they are. Anyway that was not the spirit in which I said what I did. I removed the derogatory comments in the interest of civility.About a dozen years ago when I had my Audio Note/Altec 9844 system, the configuration in my room required speaker wire runs of over 20 feet each. In a rush to get things going I grabbed the only thing I had that was long enough- some little 22 gauge stuff from the hardware store that I had purchased so that I could have sound out in the garage. This cheap wire sounded great with the the AN/Altec system and I never felt compelled to make a change.
Some time later an audio buddy came over to pick up some tubes from me, and he offered some speaker wire that was about 3/8 inch in diameter as a trade. I don't recall what the brand of this wire was, and it didn't really matter because we both agreed that it didn't sound as real as the cheap stuff I had been using. There was less image depth and the high frequencies took on an etched quality that just didn't sound right.
So what's my point here?
1. Despite what you seem to be implying I do not subscribe to the "I spent a lot of money on this speaker wire so it HAS to sound better" camp. I am after getting the most realistic music that I can out of my system within my budget, and if hardware store speaker wire gets me closer to that end vs. one of the more esoteric wires, then that frees up funds to buy more music. In my experience (and others here in this thread) changing out wires, whether speaker, connecting, or internal can change what comes out of the speakers.
