I wanted to try out some high efficiency speakers for a while and I got real lucky this week.
I picked up a pair of Hitachi HS-1400W speakers that are quite efficient at 98 dB. Those date from the early 70’s.
I have found very little information on them on the internet. I wonder if they were sold solely in Japan. Anyway a used pair found its way near my place and I am quite happy about it.

It uses what was called an Acoustic Super Woofer system. Speakers came with the original instructions manual. They can also be bi or tri-amplified.
The original horn tweeters were replaced by Fostex horn tweeter. The rest of the component are all stock. Speakers seem to be Alnico by Coral.
I am trying to buy a pair of voice coil and dome for the tweeter model H-54H, which is the stock horn tweeter on the HS-1400W. Part number is 24100232. Anyone know where I could source these?
This is probably the best deal I ever made in audio. Paid $250, which is a real joke. It is stunning on live music. The Jeff Beck CD, Live at Ronnie Scott’s sound is superb on these. They are not the last detail of resolution but it is absolutely lively and exciting. On vinyl they are less detailed than my Duntech Marquis and the image less. Still they get your feet tapping big time.
I think that I am starting to understand the interest in high efficiency speakers.
Sadly the speakers do not accept bananas so I am not able for the moment to use my excellent BIS Type 1 speakers cable. The stock binding post on the Hitachi look to be made of white metal which I'm sure is less than optimal for sound reproduction. Since they date from the early 70’s this was before quality binding post hit the market. I have never seen this type of binding post. I currently have them plugged with Cardas Twin-Link which is not at all in the same league as the BIS speakers cable. I had my audio repairman order two sets of Eichman speakers binding post. This will enable me to use the BIS Type 1 speaker cables that are terminated with Eichman bullet plugs.
The finish is still very nice after about 40 years, just a few blemishes.
In summary these speakers have amazed me and they surely have broken the image I had of Hitachi. Yes they could produce excellent product when they wanted.
If anyone could share information about the origin of those speakers it would be much appreciated. Ideas and experience for upgrading parts would also be welcome.
Thanks,
Pierre
