Hi SimmondsI suspect Bruce empirically designs by reducing the size of a horn to hte point where it still loads well without too much ripple sitting on the floor with the back chamber near the back wall.
My old m=0.6 JBL 2220H horns have an 80 sq.in. throat ~ 21.5" path from the edge ot the surround to the 18.25" by 20" mouth - a crude nearfield sine sweep I did nearly a decade ago shows the LF knee to be ~125Hz - a bit better than I would have expected from a ~160Hz 1/4 path length.
Probably a nice compromise as the depth worked well with his original 250Hz midhorn to line to line up the voice coils. The small houth height is nice too for seated listening postions - I've heard Bruce now makes a 80Hz tractrix which is only about 18" high.
This type of horn shouldn't be tough to build - a HF "salad-bowl" tractrix is another story.
Best Wishes,
Freddy
