Re: Scott 222C budget speaker suggestions

The Single Driver(quasi) option is a very nice way to go. It provides excellent midrange performance, believable acoustic space, and nice dynamics. However, if you choose to go with a bass reflex enclosure, be prepared to augment it with a subwoofer. The full range drivers seem to roll off a bit early, and need help in the 50 to 60 hertz range.

There is a semi-DIY solution to your problem. Order a pair of the floorstanding cabinets from Madisound, they cost about $140 each. Nicely constructed. Then load a 8 inch full range driver in them. This will require you to cut two holdes, one for the driver, one for the port. Drill holes for the binding posts, and screw holes for the drivers. Add some polyfill for dampening, and solder in some wire. You will have a nice weekend project...if that. Should be done in a day.

The Fostex drivers are quite nice. I have also heard the Audio Nirvana full range drivers, and I think those are the best bang for the buck going. Also Parts Express has a Goldwood 8 inch full ranger, just not sure what the capabilities of that one are. You can build the Audio Nirvana's with the Super 8 driver for under $500 a pair. It's worth considering. If you feel that you would like more bass response then order the Parts Express Titanic III 10" powered subwoofer kit at a later date.
