I have heard the Madisound BK-16s and they are pretty amazing speakers for the money. Madisound is practically giving away the cabinet kits. I'm a woodworker and wouldn't make my own cabs given how well done and inexpensive their cabs are. Since the wood is already cut (CNC) to exact size, the biggest deal would seem to be taking your time gluing them up properly. Otherwise, your friends may be right and you'll need to save your pennies to make a significant move up
