Hi David,The last time we discussed this I didn't understand the coloration side of diffraction, and was only thinking about imaging. My vote for the wide baffle was based on trying to push the diffraction arrival time outside the first .68 milliseconds of the impulse. And come to think of it the wide-baffle speakers that I have thought imaged superbly all had a generous radius to their edge.
The coloration induced by a reflection (and I presume also by diffraction) peaks around 2 milliseconds delay, decreasing in both directions from there. So the shorter the time interval before diffraction takes place the less audible its coloration effects will be.
Now I still lean towards wide cabinets to lower the frequency at which the baffle-step kicks in, but Earl's probably right in that the cabinet should be no wider than necessary. Fortunately horns/waveguides and high-efficiency woofers require fairly wide cabinets to begin with, so I don't have to do too much soul-searching on the subject.
Best wishes,
Duke
