Hi Earl
I've been using the kxproject driver and compatible soundcard as a dsp active crossover since March 2003. I have not yet damaged a driver with this system, although the possibility to cook something is always there with any crossover system, kxproject included. Care is required to avoid incorrect connections, levels, and frequencies. I recommend suitable capacitors on hf drivers as insurance against mistakes. The only gotcha that I can think of is that many pc software applications will override the system master volume and increase it instantly to maximum, web pages with flash content in particular. Can be alarming with high-efficiency loudspeakers and sufficient amplifier power.
There are techniques to control this issue and one must master the them before attempting high spl listening. Primary one is to use integrated amplifiers with volume controls, or preamps or attenuator devices between pc outputs and amps, and set up amp levels with the pc outputs at maximum, so that you get no surprises.PC compatibility is not a difficult issue. One must avoid certain Via chipset motherboards and Win2k or XP is preferred to win98, but I started out with a P3-400 which was more than sufficient to run the user interface and an audio player. I emphasize that the dsp operates independent of the computer cpu, and one can run demanding software applications in the pc without affecting the sound processing at all. Only when you task up the pc enough to interfere with your media player, can you get any difficulties. I simultaneously run 3D solid modeling software, openoffice spreadsheet, thunderbird email, iTunes, half-a-dozen open pdf catalogs, firefox web browser, on an Athlon 3200 [2.4Ghz]. DVD playback with software de-interlacing is also no problem.
Final note, version 3537 is current, 3538 is beta and as it is not finished, some of the best 3rd-party plugins are not yet available for 3538.
