It is a cheap experiment to do.
The DEQ2496 can be had for a couple of hundred and the mic is on the order of 80 bucks. Used packages come up every so often.
Do *not* use the auto-eq, it does not give the best results! In addition, the DAC is ok but not the last word in refinement. Even a cheap DAC like the Ack Dack 1.x (200 used now?) is an upgrade can bring a lot of enjoyment.
Good digital does not have to be expensive, and once you start measuring your in room response and changing things, it can be eye opening for not a lot of bucks. Given you have a preamp, it is easy to run both paths as well.
I would take the naysayers with a grain of salt, and if you want a cheap experiment to see what is right for you, buy used and have fun :-)
