I do not find any of that necessary to think about this issue. If you have a constant phase delay wrt frequency, that corresponds to a changing time delay wrt frequency. If this accompanies a flat frequency response and no correction in some form is applied, the system will not correctly reproduce a waveshape.This doesn't mean that no direct radiator system can correctly reproduce a complex wave. It's just not a given that it will happen.
