Well, I have some early '74s with vertically mounted horns and they image pretty well, although I do listen in the nearfield in a smallish bedroom. I need to bring them and the Wrights out into the big room to put them through their paces.During the back half of '74, they switched to mounting them horizontially, so maybe this was the cause for what you heard from others?
