I think a lot of that stereotype came from when people used to try and run their old Phase Linears or whatever at just below idle and wondered why it sounded like crap. Horns, or at least good horns like the altecs, are like any quality loudspeaker in that garbage in = garbage out. That said, with a good amplifier and source, whether SS or tubes, the Altecs actually lean slightly toward the musical and forgiving end of things, with excellent open sounding mids. IME. Klipsch (the classics, not the current HT crap) tends to be more analytical in general, but with a *slightly* squawkier squawker, if that makes any sense.GB
