Go the whole hog with at least a system with lots of woofer area (single 15 or dual 12s) and a compression driver-horn treble.Altec is easiest to do and sounds very good, so do others though; JBLs, Edgars, some Klipsch and various DIY things.
There are lots of Altec Valencias, Iconics and 604s on ebay right now, pick a pair, they're all good IMO. If you don't like them turn around and sell them. That's about the easiest advice i can give you.
The Straight 8 was one of the most compressed, lifeless speakers I ever heard when I heard a set with Bottlehead amps. No good. In my opinion ya understand.
