Hi John,Your link is of course to the Lansing Heritage site article that describes the original Lansing Iconic, produced by Lansing Mfg. Co. beginning in 1937 and on through the Altec Lansing era until 1945 or so. The Altec 612 cabinet, used with the 604 Duplex for decades as the industry-standard studio monitor, began life as the Iconic bass bin.
Jim Lansing used the term "Iconic" on some of his first drivers after he left Altec and began the company that became JBL, but Altec quickly informed him that they considered the term theirs as part of their purchase of Lansing Mfg. Co.- Altec officially trademarked the term in 1947.
Altec continued to sporadically label some of their two way, 800 Hz. crossover systems as Iconic through the 1950s, 1960s and possibly later as well. They are all worthwhile speakers, though it is hard to beat the original field coil systems. At some point Altec let the trademark lapse, and Iconic Manufacturing Company has it now.
