It's the crossover, and everything else. Sound's a little - a lot - too ad hoc. I've heard Altec Carmels run with a 2A3 SET and they sounded wonderful. IMO, run them parallel off the 8 ohm tap with correct crossovers connected conventionally and be happy. I'm not enough or an Altec geek to recall if that crossover is a series type, but if it is that would explain some stuff. You may want to ask on the Altec forum.GB
