Re: Hard choice ALTEC 290 or ALTEC 288

Mike as you know 290s depending on model have rated response to about 7K. But in typical Altec fashion they fail to tell you that at 7K they are more than 10 dB down. Additionally HF response also varies with horn cutoff freq and low XO point. The lower the low freq response the lower the HF response. Nevertheless reasonably flat response can be obtained to low 6K by resistor padding down the mids and or EQ boosting the highs especially if XO point is not below 500-600 Hz. This technique of flattening the MR and extending the HF is also useful in the 288/299 series comp drivers. I have used the 902 1" tangerine comp driver in a small horn as a tweet with good results above 3-9K depending on the MR driver.

But I am not aware of tweets with greater than 110 dB sensitivity. Bullets get that high ie: McCauly and JBL but have poor dispersion compared to your Emilar MRs. Doubling up on tweets to get above 110 dB is not a bad idea as you can spread the dispersion as well.
