Re: Altec 825/828 vs Onken with Altec 511/802

These are not true Karlsons where the woofer is tilted up and the slot is vertical. Mine really couple with the floor well but may also be causing problems in the mids for better coupling. Cy coloration I mean they sound a bit disembodied from the bass and closed in compared to using the open baffle midrange drivers, also lack the transient response and snap of the mid. With these the response rises through the mids above 200 by a couple of db then there is a strong narrow 12-18 db dip around 800 Hz. This is caused by the front slot, the woofer does not do this when the slot/coupler is removed. It also doesn't have the feel it in your chest punch or percieved low distortion (like a big horn) in the bass as it does with the coupler.

500 Hz may be fine, true blood Karlsonites use full range drivers in their couplers and love them. I prefer a high sensitivity linear open baffle mid with a 250 - 300 Hz crossover by a long shot.
