Re: Altec 3 and 4-way Monitors

Hi Again Ron

The seller isn't trying to pull anything over anyone's eyes. They are legitimate Altec monitors that originally sold at very high prices. As he says in his auction, he is not the original owner, nor an audio specialist, and knows nothing of their background. I contacted him after seeing his auction to see if I could get pictures of the system. I pointed out the URL to our site to clear up the history issues that he had wrong. He later added our URL to his auction - the reason for which I am not quite sure. There is no info on his system anywhere on our site.

The seller was kind enought to reply with a number of photos and then asked me a series of questions on what I may know about his system and its potential value. He thought they were worth a couple of hundred dollars. Hence his opening price of $299 and no reserve.

I told him that the 9862's appear to be a virtual copy of a JBL 4343 and that those systems routinely sell for $3,000/pr on Ebay in excellent condition. However, I cautioned that the Altec system would be an unknown product, even to most Altec collectors, and that $3,000 would be difficult to realize on his system. Nonetheless, this seems to have put stars in his eyes and he obviously added the 4343 note with hopes this will generate similar prices. I wish him luck.

BTW, the 4343 parallel appears to be accurate. I've heard from Todd White of the Unofficial Altec Lansing Homepage that these systems were meant for export only and primarily to the Japanese market (he also states that they sound very good). At the time they were made, the 4343 was the most successful speaker JBL ever marketed in Japan. The Altec 9862 copies the configuration, driver types, and visual look. Note the use of an accoustic lens on the compression driver. This is a first, and possibly only example, from Altec. The UHF driver appears to be a ring radiator, also similar to the JBL. Finally, the 4300 series were noted for their distinctive look of walnut cabinets with blue front baffles. The catalogs show this system with walnut cabinets and Altec green baffles.

Regards
Don
