Consider an Altec 604-8G in a 9 cu ft enclosure (other early 604s also likely excellent). Single speaker so a point source, and very efficient. Commonly used in mixing rooms in the day, so a bit of a reference there. Marquart designed a phase correcting crossover, completing the needed elements for a great speaker.
If the rest of your system has the capability of blowing you away, then you will be blown away. A chain is only as good as its weakest link.
