my room was similar to yours 20 x17. here is what worked in my room.

altec a5. with 416z and jbl 2441/jbl smith horn 2397 .. great sound but my room was undersized. i enjoyed it more when i was in next room. none of the altec horns worked in this room. i had success with jbl 2397. jackson lecleach. jbl 2384, hasquin tractrix, edgar 350. basically my room was too small for a full fledged horn system. the jbl 2397 and 2384 wer really, really good. you might be able to use them in your room crossed above > = 800.

altec bolero .. great woofer but horn is just accceptable. from 40 to 2000 (woofer range)... it is really good. there are others like this ( i forget all the model name but bolero had a hook into me.

altec model 19... i found this a bit boring. it is more ok than good. this also was a tad too 'big' for my room


altec big red.. better than model 19 .. but nothing compared to a5.

altec 604 in custom cabinents. rather unpredicatable. on some music sublime. on others, tweeter had ants in its pants.

altec valencia.. on some music this was magical. but often the balance between top and bottom just wasnt there.

for your room i think a 414 woofer (12") in a custom cbirch ply cabinet crossed between 1200 and 1600 to a compression driver/horn combo from jbl. this is the system i plan to get when i am old... it works well in moderate sized rooms and has all the midrange altec magic.
