I may be one of the authors whose review of these speakers you referred to in your original posting. I have owned a LOT of speakers including, at different times, two pair of Altec Model 19s. In the old efficient dynamic speaker market, I have owned and listened to at length Klipsch Cornwalls and K-horns as well as the Model 19s. I have also heard but not owned Electro-voice equivalents, which I thought way too shrill and piercing to listen to.
In my experience, the Model 19s are my preference. I found they had greater clarity and detail than either Klipsch speaker I owned which, by comparison, sounded constricted, shrill and colored.
There are many Klipsch lovers who would disagree with me. Your best bet is to listen for yourself before making a purchase. I can add that both pairs of Model 19s I owned sounded the same, which I think is remarkable in 40 year old speakers!
Also, I bought both pairs within the last ten years. Both were walnut, in very good cosmetic shape with full grilles and so on. I paid $1,800. for one pair and $1,200. for the second pair. There are a number of these on e-Bay at, like, $6,000, which is WAAAY more than I would ever pay for a pair, which may explain why they have been on sale forever and have not sold ;^)
Enjoy....
