Leaving the original crossover would be wise, but if you're set on an "upgrade" listen to Mr. Steady.
I had the privilege of living for a year with a system, Cactus-something, a collection of relatively inexpensive Eminence drivers with a set of Marchand XM-26 tube active crossovers. Sold me for all time on their benefits.
Bill's the Man. There is also the XM-9 in solid state.
You may also consider the Great Plains Audio crossover that significantly upgrades the woeful level control of the original.
