Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

RE: Altec question

If I was you, I would start w what you have and do a three way w the 288's, the 594 horn, JBL tweeter and the 414's.

I actually have that horn but have never hooked it up... I need to find a mate to a lonley 291b I have.

Putting together a crossover is kind of a thing. A couple of questions:

Can you take measurements?Tthere are online calculators that can help with xover design... would you be able to do that? Do you know someone who could get you started? Try not to use the old Altec xover but it may be a good way to get listening to music a bit faster.

Eventually you will either want to get a high efficiency 15" woofer or another pair of 414's and then you'll need a new cabinet.

The charms of the 414's, like what JELabs is doing, is that there is no high pass and he lets it run up as high as it can go w no cap in the signal. Then he brings in the tweeter (802/32 horn) to handle the rest. Not unlike what people do with subwoofers on the other end of the spectrum. The benefit is that it is a very simple xover which helps in efficiency, and purity of signal. I doubt it sounds like a turd. With a properly designed SET amp, I imagine it sounds quite good within its capabilities and room size.

I can speak from experience that the 32 horn(1" 802 variants) sounds terrific. I have both the plastic and metal and its my opinion they sound slightly different but I could live with either one. I use mine with a 15" woofer bass reflex and love it. I cross over around 1200HZ. My box is 6cuft. So, the 15" woofer in a bigger box was, in my opinion, a better way to go than the 12"ers and small box.

Now, having said all that, I think a three way with 1.4" Altec driver and a 15" driver (my ultimate pick would be a Altec 515B)might be better. You get the benefit of the compression driver handling an important part of the bandwidth betwean 700hz and 7000hz. A woofer handling 30hz to 1200hz is less than optimal (but still better than most). You will need a big cabinet (think Shindo Latour) and eventually want to go with different big format horns... my choice would be 805's or 1005's. And you will need an appropriate size room for this... which is why I haven't gone there.

below is a link to a long thread about JeLabs configuration but there is also info about 15" config as well.
